What Proposition 65 is

California’s Proposition 65 requires businesses to give a clear and reasonable warning before exposing anyone in California to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The list is long and covers substances found in ordinary manufactured goods, including some metals, plastics, dyes and adhesives.

How it may apply to storage goods

Cases, pouches, dust bags and lock boxes are assembled from coated shells, woven cloth, foam, thread, gaskets, latch springs and powder coatings. Any of those components could contain a listed substance in trace amounts, even where the finished item meets applicable material requirements. Whether a warning is required for a particular item depends on the exposure assessment and on the exact components used by the maker.
